How to Know If He's Serious About Marriage or Just Wasting Your Time

How to know if a Muslim man is serious about marriage

Assalamu alaikum dear brothers and sisters ✨,

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from months of conversations with someone who never quite commits. Weeks that turn into months. Months that somehow become a year. Questions about intentions that get deflected with warmth and charm but no real answers. And eventually the painful realisation that while you were waiting for clarity, he was simply enjoying the company.

This is one of the most common experiences Muslim sisters describe when looking for a spouse, and it causes real harm. Not just the wasted time, though that matters. The emotional investment, the hope, the adjusting of your expectations, and then having to start again from zero.

Islam has a lot to say about this situation, and it is not gentle with the man who wastes a woman's time. A man who engages with a woman under the implication of marriage with no genuine intention of following through is not behaving with the character Islam demands. Understanding what a serious man actually looks like, and what a time-waster looks like, is one of the most practically important things a sister can know before she enters the process.

Why the "Talking Stage" Is the Problem

Before getting into the specific signs, it is worth naming the root issue. The "talking stage", the extended period of getting to know someone privately before any family involvement, any formal declaration of intent, or any structure, is not from the Sunnah. And it is precisely the environment in which time-wasting thrives.

When two people communicate privately, without wali involvement, without witnesses, and without a clear timeline, the accountability that protects both parties simply does not exist. A man in this situation carries very little consequence for keeping things going indefinitely. There is no wali to face. There is no timeline to meet. There is no moment at which he has to declare himself one way or the other.

The Islamic model removes this ambiguity by design. The Prophet ﷺ did not describe a stage of private getting-to-know-you before formal intention was expressed. The Sunnah describes a man who sees a woman, intends marriage, and then takes steps, involving family, meeting the wali, making his intentions known. Clarity is built into the process from the start.

"If someone comes to you whose deen and character you are pleased with, then marry him. If you do not, there will be fitnah in the land and great corruption."

[Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1084, graded Hasan]

The hadith is addressed to those receiving a proposal. It assumes the man has come, formally, with intention clear. The filtering happens at the point of consideration, not after months of conversation.

This does not mean you cannot take time to get to know someone before agreeing to marriage. It means that time should be spent in a structured way, with your wali involved, with intention declared, and with a reasonable timeline in mind. Anything outside that structure leaves you exposed to exactly the kind of situation this article is about.

Signs He Is Genuinely Serious

1. He Involves Family Early

A man who is serious about marrying you will not want to keep you hidden. One of the clearest early indicators of genuine intention is the willingness, and proactive desire, to involve family on both sides in a timely manner.

He asks about your wali early in the process. He does not treat the mention of your father or guardian as a threat or an inconvenience. He understands that approaching your wali is the correct step and he takes it.

He also introduces you to the idea of his own family becoming involved. A man who has no intention of ever mentioning your name to his mother is not planning to marry you. A man who says things like "my family will love you" and then actively makes that introduction happen is demonstrating something real.

Wali involvement is the single most reliable filter for serious intention. A man who genuinely wants to marry you will welcome the accountability. A man who wants to string you along will resist or delay it consistently.

2. He Has a Clear and Realistic Timeline

Seriousness has a shape. It moves forward. There are conversations about realistic next steps, and those conversations lead to actual next steps.

A serious man can answer the question "what is your timeline for marriage?" without deflecting it. He has thought about it. He has a rough answer. It might not be a specific date, but it is a genuine commitment to a timeframe, and that timeframe is reasonable, not indefinitely far in the future.

Compare this to the man who always has a reason why now is not the right time. He is getting settled in his job. He needs to save a bit more. His family is going through something. After Ramadan. After Eid. After this, after that. Every "after" is followed by another "after," and the timeline never closes.

Circumstances matter. Life is not always perfectly timed. But there is a difference between genuine obstacles that are being actively worked through and a pattern of postponement that has no real end point. If you have been hearing "soon" for longer than six months with nothing concrete to show for it, that is information.

3. His Conversations Are Purposeful

A serious man's conversations with you have direction. He is learning about who you are in ways that are relevant to a life together. He asks about your values, your deen, your goals, your relationship with your family, your vision for a home. He shares the same about himself.

His questions are not superficial and his interest is not primarily in your appearance or in conversations that feel more like entertainment than exploration. He is building a picture of whether you are compatible for marriage, and he is doing it intentionally.

There is nothing wrong with humour, warmth, and enjoying each other's company. But if months have passed and you genuinely cannot say what he is looking for in a wife, what his relationship with his deen looks like, or what his intentions are for his life, the conversations have been pleasant but not purposeful.

4. He Is Consistent

Consistency is one of the most underrated signs of genuine character. A serious man is the same person week to week. His level of interest does not fluctuate wildly. He does not disappear for days and return with charming explanations. He follows through on what he says he will do.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are small."

[Sahih al-Bukhari 6464]

This principle applies beyond ibadah. A man whose character is consistent, in how he communicates, in how he treats you across different moods and circumstances, in whether his actions match his words, is showing you something real. Consistency over time is one of the clearest windows into actual character.

Inconsistency, on the other hand, is almost always a signal worth paying attention to. Hot and cold behaviour, varying levels of interest, periods of intensity followed by withdrawal, these patterns do not resolve themselves after marriage. They intensify.

5. He Respects the Boundaries of the Process

A man who is serious about marrying you will respect the Islamic framework of how the process should happen. He will not push for more private communication than is appropriate. He will not suggest meeting alone in situations that are not permissible. He will not make you feel like the Islamic structure is an obstacle to your connection, he will treat it as the right way to build something that will last.

"No man should be alone with a woman, and no woman should travel except with a mahram."

[Sahih al-Bukhari 5233]

A man who respects this ruling, who suggests meetings that involve family or a chaperone, who does not press for khalwa, who keeps communication appropriate in content and frequency, is demonstrating the kind of character that makes a husband trustworthy. A man who consistently pushes against these boundaries while calling himself serious about marriage is showing you something important about who he will be after the nikah.

6. He Asks About Your Wali and Follows Through

This deserves its own point because it is so specific and so reliable. A man who is genuinely working toward nikah will ask about your wali relatively early and will follow through on making contact. He understands that this is the step that moves things from conversation to real consideration.

If months have passed and he has still not asked about your wali, or he has asked and then done nothing, or he keeps finding reasons why that conversation has not happened yet, his actions are telling you something his words are not.

Signs He Is Wasting Your Time

1. He Avoids Any Mention of Family or Wali

This is the clearest single red flag in an Islamic context. A man who has no plan to involve your wali, who changes the subject when family is mentioned, or who frames your wali as an obstacle rather than a natural part of the process, is not operating within the Islamic framework for marriage.

This avoidance is not coincidental. It is usually deliberate, because wali involvement creates accountability. Once your father or guardian knows about this man, there are expectations. There is a timeline. There are conversations that need to happen. A man who has no intention of following through will avoid that accountability consistently.

2. He Has Been "Getting Ready" for a Very Long Time

There is a version of the time-wasting scenario that is particularly difficult to recognise because it is wrapped in sincerity. He genuinely seems to want to marry you. He talks about the future. He references "when we are married" in conversation. He just always has something that needs to happen first.

The issue is not that life has obstacles. It is when the obstacles are never resolved, when new ones appear as soon as old ones are addressed, and when the actual step of moving forward never quite arrives despite years of apparent intention.

A man who has been "getting ready" for marriage for more than a year without concrete progress toward nikah is either not as ready as he says, or not as committed as he appears. Both are important information.

3. The Relationship Is a Secret

If the person closest to him, his mother, his closest friend, a brother, has no idea you exist, you need to ask yourself why.

A serious man who has found someone he intends to marry is not keeping her secret. He may be discreet in how and when he shares, but the people in his life who matter to him will know that he is in the process of considering someone for marriage.

A relationship that is deliberately hidden, where he asks you not to tell people, where he explains his secrecy with reasons that never quite hold up, is a relationship without accountability. And a relationship without accountability is one in which you carry all the risk.

4. He Is Interested in Intimacy More Than Character

Pay attention to what he is actually curious about. Does he ask about your deen, your values, your goals, your relationship with your family? Or do the conversations consistently pull toward how you look, what you wear, and your physical boundaries?

A man who repeatedly tests or discusses physical boundaries before marriage, who makes comments that make you uncomfortable but frames them as compliments, or whose interest in you seems primarily physical is not approaching you with marriage as his genuine goal.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her deen. Choose the one with deen and you will prosper."

[Sahih al-Bukhari 5090]

A man who is choosing based on deen will be asking about deen. A man whose primary interest is beauty alone is showing you what he is actually selecting for.

5. His Words and Actions Consistently Do Not Match

He says he is serious. But he has not spoken to your wali. He says he is almost ready. But nothing has changed in six months. He says you are important to him. But you are consistently not his priority when life gets busy.

The gap between what a man says and what he does is where the truth lives. One or two instances of words and actions not aligning can have innocent explanations. A consistent pattern over months is not a misunderstanding, it is character.

"O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? It is greatly hateful in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do."

[Quran 61:2-3]

This ayah speaks to all believers, but the principle it establishes is worth holding in mind when evaluating someone's sincerity. A man whose words and actions consistently diverge is not behaving with the integrity Islam requires.

6. He Makes You Feel Guilty for Wanting Clarity

This one is subtle but important. When you ask for clarity, about the timeline, about speaking to your wali, about where things are heading, does he engage with the question honestly? Or does he make you feel like you are being difficult, impatient, or unfair for asking?

A serious man understands that these are reasonable questions. He may not have all the answers, but he will engage with them without making you feel bad for raising them. A man who consistently makes you feel like you are the problem for wanting clarity is using your reasonableness against you. That is not the character of a man who will be a just and kind husband.

What to Do If You Are Not Sure

If you are reading this and recognising some of the signs above but not all of them, here is a straightforward approach.

Ask the question directly. Tell him that you need to understand where things are heading and what his realistic timeline looks like. A serious man will engage with that conversation. A time-waster will deflect, charm, or make you feel bad for asking.

Involve your wali. If you have not yet, bring your father or guardian into the picture and let his response to that tell you what you need to know. A man whose interest evaporates the moment your wali is mentioned was never going to follow through.

Give it a reasonable deadline in your own mind, even if you do not share it. If nothing concrete has happened, no family introduction, no agreed timeline, no formal step forward, within a timeframe you have decided is reasonable, that is your answer.

And then protect yourself. Your time, your emotional energy, and your naseeb are not things to be given indefinitely to a man who is not clear about his intentions. Every month spent waiting on someone who is not serious is a month not spent finding someone who is.

Your Wali Is Your Best Filter

The Islamic model of involving a wali is not a bureaucratic inconvenience. It is a protection specifically designed to prevent the situation this article describes.

When a wali is involved from the beginning, when a man knows he is not just talking to you but is accountable to your family, the casual time-waster almost always removes himself. The process itself filters out the men who were never serious.

This is part of the wisdom of the Islamic framework. It does not rely on a woman being able to detect dishonesty through conversation alone, which is difficult when emotions are involved. It creates a structural accountability that makes seriousness the only viable approach for a man who wants to move forward.

A man who respects your wali, engages with him honestly, and moves through the process with integrity is showing you, through every step of that process, the character he will bring to a marriage.

You Deserve Clarity, Not Confusion

The uncertainty of not knowing where you stand is not something you are obligated to carry. You are allowed to expect clarity. You are allowed to put a time limit on how long you are willing to wait for concrete steps. You are allowed to walk away from a situation that has been vague for too long, regardless of how much you feel for the person involved.

Allah ﷻ has written a naseeb for you. That naseeb is not a man who keeps you waiting indefinitely in a situation without structure or accountability. Your spouse, when they arrive, will make their intention clear. They will move forward. They will not make you feel like wanting a real answer is an unreasonable demand.

Do not settle for confusion when clarity is what you deserve.
