Islamic Quotes About Love and Marriage From the Quran and Sunnah
The most beautiful Islamic quotes about love and marriage, taken only from the Quran and authentic hadith, each with its reference and meaning. Plus the popular 'Islamic quotes' that are not authentic.
Umm Abdullah

Assalamu alaikum dear brothers and sisters ✨,
the most beautiful Islamic quotes about love and marriage are not found in images passed around on social media. They are in the Quran and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. Allah ﷻ describes spouses as clothing for one another, says He placed affection and mercy between them, and calls marriage a solemn covenant. The Prophet ﷺ said there is nothing like marriage for two people who love one another, and that the best of people are those who are best to their wives.
Every quote below comes directly from the Quran or from an authentic hadith, with its reference so you can check it yourself. Under each one is a short explanation of what it means and how it applies to a Muslim marriage today. At the end, there is a section on popular "Islamic quotes" about love that circulate widely but have no authentic source, so you can avoid sharing them.
Whether you are single and hoping to marry, preparing for your nikah, writing a card for a newly married couple, or looking for a reminder to share with your spouse, these are the words worth holding on to.
Quran Quotes About Love Between Spouses
Affection and mercy
"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought." [Quran 30:21]
This is the most quoted verse about marriage in Islam, and for good reason. Allah ﷻ tells us that a spouse is a sign of His, that the purpose of marriage includes tranquillity, and that the love between husband and wife is something He Himself places in their hearts. The word translated as affection, mawaddah, refers to love that is felt and shown. The word translated as mercy, rahmah, is the deeper care that carries a marriage through hardship and old age.
Clothing for one another
"They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them." [Quran 2:187]
Clothing is the closest thing to a person. It covers, protects, warms and beautifies. Allah ﷻ chose this image to describe what husband and wife should be for each other: a covering for each other's faults, a protection for each other's dignity, and a source of comfort and beauty.
Dwelling in security
"It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her." [Quran 7:189]
Marriage is meant to be a place of rest. Allah ﷻ created spouses from a single origin so that each could find security and peace in the other. A home where husband and wife feel safe with each other is fulfilling one of the purposes Allah ﷻ named.
Created in pairs
"And We created you in pairs." [Quran 78:8]
A short verse with a deep meaning. Pairing is part of how Allah ﷻ designed His creation. The longing for a spouse is not a weakness or a distraction from faith. It is part of the nature Allah ﷻ placed in human beings.
Quran Quotes About the Commitment of Marriage
A solemn covenant
"And they have taken from you a solemn covenant." [Quran 4:21]
Allah ﷻ describes the marriage contract as a mithaq ghaliz, a firm and weighty covenant. The same description is used in the Quran for the covenant Allah ﷻ took from the Prophets. Marriage in Islam is not a casual arrangement. It is a serious promise made before Allah ﷻ.
Live with them in kindness
"And live with them in kindness." [Quran 4:19]
This is a direct command to husbands. Kindness is not optional, and it is not only for good days. The verse goes on to say that if a man dislikes something about his wife, perhaps Allah ﷻ has placed much good in what he dislikes.
Rights on both sides
"And due to them [i.e., the wives] is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men [i.e., husbands] have a degree over them." [Quran 2:228]
Islamic marriage is built on mutual rights. A wife has rights over her husband, just as he has rights over her. At the same time, Allah ﷻ gives the husband a degree of responsibility and leadership in the home. The scholars explained that this degree is one of responsibility, provision and protection, and that it calls the husband to greater patience and generosity, not harshness.
Allies of one another
"The believing men and believing women are allies of one another." [Quran 9:71]
Although this verse is about the believers in general, it describes the best kind of marriage perfectly. Husband and wife are allies, supporting each other in obedience to Allah ﷻ, encouraging each other in good and helping each other away from wrong.
Quran Quotes for Those Hoping to Marry
Marriage brings provision
"And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing." [Quran 24:32]
This verse is a direct encouragement to marry and to help others marry. It also carries a promise that many young Muslims need to hear: worry about money should not be the reason a righteous marriage is delayed. Allah ﷻ is the One who provides.
Good for the good
"And good women are for good men, and good men are for good women." [Quran 24:26]
Many scholars of tafsir explained this verse as referring to good and bad words and deeds as well as people, and it is often quoted as a reminder that the best way to find a righteous spouse is to become righteous yourself. Work on your own character, and trust Allah ﷻ with the rest.
The dua for a spouse
"Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous." [Quran 25:74]
This is the most complete dua for marriage in the Quran. It asks not only for a spouse, but for a spouse who is the coolness of your eyes, and for a household that becomes an example for others. Our guide to the best dua for marriage explains this and other duas in more depth.
Trust in the outcome
"But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not." [Quran 2:216]
For anyone who has been hurt in the search for a spouse, or who is waiting longer than they hoped, this verse is a source of deep comfort. What Allah ﷻ withholds may be a protection, and what He gives in its place may be better than what you asked for.
Hadith About Love and Marriage
Nothing like marriage
"There is nothing like marriage, for two who love one another." [Sunan Ibn Majah 1847]
The Prophet ﷺ did not treat love between a man and a woman as something shameful. He pointed it towards its proper home. When two people love each other, the answer the Sunnah gives is nikah.
The best enjoyment of this world
"The world is enjoyment and the best enjoyment in the world is a righteous wife." [Sahih Muslim 1467]
Of everything this world offers, the Prophet ﷺ named a righteous spouse as the best. Not wealth, status or comfort, but a wife whose deen and character bring goodness into every part of life.
Choose for the deen
"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty and her religion. So choose the one with religion, may your hands be rubbed with dust." [Sahih al-Bukhari 5090]
This is the most important piece of advice about choosing a spouse. Beauty fades, wealth comes and goes, and family status means little inside the home. Deen is what makes a marriage last.
Whoever is able, let him marry
"Whoever among you is able to marry, should marry." [Sahih al-Bukhari 5065]
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged young people to marry when they are able, explaining in the same hadith that marriage helps a person lower the gaze and guard their chastity. Marriage is not something to delay endlessly for the perfect moment. It is a protection for your deen.
Hadith About How to Treat Your Spouse
The best of you
"The best of you is the best to his wives, and I am the best of you to my wives." [Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3895]
The Prophet ﷺ measured a man's goodness by how he treats his wife at home, not by how he appears in public. The man who is kind, patient and generous with his wife is the one the Prophet ﷺ called the best.
Complete in faith
"The most complete of the believers in faith, is the one with the best character among them." [Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1162]
The same hadith continues by saying that the best of people are those who are best to their women. Character at home is not separate from faith. It is part of it.
Serving his family
'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked what the Prophet ﷺ used to do in his house. She said:
"He used to keep himself busy serving his family and when it was the time for prayer he would go for it." [Sahih al-Bukhari 676]
The best of creation, the leader of the Muslims, helped in his own home. Husbands who think household help is beneath them have a clear answer in the Sunnah.
Look for the good
"A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." [Sahih Muslim 1469]
Every spouse has flaws. This hadith teaches husbands, and by extension wives, to look past the things that irritate them and remember the qualities they love and respect. It is one of the most practical pieces of marriage advice ever given.
Kindness beautifies everything
"Kindness is not to be found in anything but that it adds to its beauty." [Sahih Muslim 2594a]
Gentleness in speech, patience in disagreement and softness in correction make a marriage beautiful. Harshness does the opposite, even when the point being made is correct.
Small acts are rewarded
"You will be rewarded for whatever you spend for Allah's sake even if it were a morsel which you put in your wife's mouth." [Sahih al-Bukhari 56]
Spending on your family, caring for your spouse and even the smallest affectionate gesture are acts of worship when done for the sake of Allah ﷻ. Love in marriage is not only a feeling. It is a form of ibadah.
Gifts build love
"Give gifts and you will love one another." [Al-Adab al-Mufrad 594]
A small gift, given for no reason, is one of the simplest ways to keep love alive. The Prophet ﷺ taught it as a means of building affection between people, and there are few people it suits better than a husband and wife.
Love said out loud
When 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet ﷺ who was the most beloved person to him, he ﷺ answered: "'Aishah." [Sahih al-Bukhari 3662]
The Prophet ﷺ was not embarrassed to say, in front of his Companions, that his wife was the most beloved person to him. Telling your spouse that you love them, and letting others know you honour them, is part of the Sunnah. Our guide to romance in Islam has many more examples of how he ﷺ showed love to his wives.
Loyalty that lasts
'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
"Never did I feel jealous of any woman as I was jealous of Khadija." [Sahih Muslim 2435a]
Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) had passed away before 'Aishah was married, yet the Prophet ﷺ spoke of her so often and with such love that 'Aishah felt it. Love in Islam is not a phase that fades. It is loyalty that continues, even after death.
Quotes for Patience in the Search
Allah is near
"And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me." [Quran 2:186]
For anyone who has been asking Allah ﷻ for a spouse for a long time, this verse is a reminder that every dua is heard. Allah ﷻ is not distant from your search. He is nearer than you think.
Do not give up
"The invocation of anyone of you is granted (by Allah) if he does not show impatience (by saying, 'I invoked Allah but my request has not been granted.')" [Sahih al-Bukhari 6340]
The Prophet ﷺ warned against one specific mistake in dua: giving up. The single Muslim who has been asking for years and starts to say "dua doesn't work for me" has said the very thing that stops the answer. Keep asking.
He is enough
"And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him." [Quran 65:3]
Trust is the foundation of a halal search. Take the lawful means, involve your family and wali, make dua, and then leave the outcome with the One who is sufficient. Our piece on the barakah of patience in the marriage search explores this in more depth.
Popular "Islamic Quotes" That Are Not Authentic
Search for Islamic love quotes and you will find hundreds of images with beautiful words attributed to the Quran, the Prophet ﷺ or the Companions. Many of them have no authentic source. Attributing words to the Prophet ﷺ that he did not say is a serious matter, so it is worth knowing which ones to avoid.
One of the most widely shared is a saying that when a husband and wife look at each other with love, Allah ﷻ looks at them with mercy. It is often presented as a hadith, but it is not found in any of the reliable collections with an authentic chain, and scholars of hadith have not accepted it. The meaning may sound beautiful, but it should not be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.
Another common category is love quotes attributed to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). Many of the romantic quotes credited to him online have no traceable source at all. The same goes for lines from poets such as Rumi, which are frequently shared as if they were Islamic teachings or even verses of the Quran. They are not.
The saying that marriage completes half of the deen is often shared too. A narration with this meaning is recorded by al-Bayhaqi, and some scholars graded it acceptable while others questioned it. It is not in Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim, so it should not be presented as if it were.
The safest rule is simple. Before you share a quote as Islamic, ask where it comes from. If it is a verse, find the surah and ayah number. If it is a hadith, find the book and number, and check its grading. If you cannot find a source, do not attribute it to the Prophet ﷺ.
How to Use These Quotes
These quotes have many uses beyond social media. Write one inside a card for a couple on their nikah day. Read 30:21 or 2:187 at a walima. Put 25:74 on your phone's lock screen as a daily reminder to make dua for a spouse. Share Tirmidhi 3895 with a brother who is about to get married. Send your spouse the hadith about the morsel of food, and then actually do it.
If you are looking for the dua to say to a newly married couple, the Sunnah has a specific one, and we have gathered it with other wedding duas in our guide to Islamic wedding wishes and duas.
The Love Worth Building
The quotes in this article describe a kind of love that is very different from what films and social media sell. It is love placed by Allah ﷻ, protected by a solemn covenant, shown through kindness and service, and directed towards Jannah. It begins with choosing a spouse for their deen and grows through years of patience, gratitude and small acts of care.
If you are still searching for that spouse, keep these words close, keep your search halal, and trust Allah ﷻ with the timing. And if you are already married, choose one of these quotes this week and live it with your spouse.
